Every month the Deborahs from Bloemfontein visit elderly residents in the Haven Old Age Home, offering love and prayers and spending time with them, as most of the senior citizens don’t receive any visits from family members or friends.
To demonstrate that they are still able to do something by themselves and exercise their minds by creating beautiful objects, the Deborahs came up with the idea of doing crafts and handiwork with them.
When the Deborahs arrived, the employees and elderly residents were waiting for the visitors with much excitement. Each one used their creativity and had a lot of fun as well. Even the employees wanted to join in. Everyone was happy to realise that they were still able to do something, regardless of their physical condition.
Mrs Sebongile, the social worker at the centre, showed her gratitude, saying the Deborahs would be welcome any time and the idea was one of the best they had had in years.
Mrs Chedi, the nurse at the Haven, said the elderly residents saw that the work they had created for themselves was worthwhile and made each of them feel special.
