The group of Deborahs in Angola carried out social work at the women’s prison. They were received with great affection by the employees, management and especially all the inmates who appreciated a word of faith and the love that each group member offered. The Deborahs are thankful for this welcome, remembering that in the beginning it was not always so. They believed that one day it would change and how it has changed!
Gift packs were prepared with great care containing fruit to give to every detainee. Although seemingly a simple gift, these were very special. The eyes of many were filled with tears. Reacting as children, many of the women had not tasted fruit for years.
The women were really excited to leave their cells and come to the meeting. Even though they are there awaiting trial, their joy of having this oportuninity was obvious..
The Pastor that is responsivble for the Prison Ministry led the meeting and he taught a lesson of humility and keeping the faith. He warned that many have within them a deep hatred, bitterness, resentment and anxiety about being set free. If they had the same commitment to removing from themselves all the things that saddened God, then they would truly be different.
The Deborahs’ work is gradual, gaining trust to enable them to help others in the process of life transformation. A simple hug, handshake, affection or being attentive, especially to listening to the outpouring from each detainee makes all the difference. Their work goes far beyond a simple visit. They need to pay psychological attention to cases when necessary and take the opportunity to pray for each request brought to them.
In all, they found their work most productive when the inmates shared their experiences. Many have said they were no longer the same people they were before receiving this guidance and attending prayer meetings. They have been able to break free from the past.
The group Deborahs will continue in this mission to set captives free in spirit.
